Long time no see…
Well hello and happy new year! I can’t believe it’s 2018! You may have noticed it’s been a bit quiet over here recently. At the end of last year I had a long spell of ill health, which I won’t go into. It made blogging (and doing just about anything) near impossible. I’m pleased to say I’m on the mend and super excited for the new year and getting back into Earth, Wind and Waste.
The whole time I was ill, my waste-less cause remained at the forefront of my mind. Medical stuff has the tendency to all be a bit plasticky and single use. I struggled to muster my usual energy to make waste free bits from scratch, but I have tried to maintain my waste-less lifestyle. It struck me how quickly the desire for self care can dominate the need for ‘earth care’ and how hard it is to strike that balance. No matter how bad things get and how important it is to look after ourselves, we all still need to do our bit.
Belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Of course, Christmas happened in my absence! I was getting better by this point so managed to have a lovely time with family. I’m afraid I didn’t have an entirely waste free Christmas. Being unwell, I didn’t manage to hand make all the gifts I had planned, but I made became obsessed with making woolly pompom wreaths which I gave as gifts. I also bought various sustainable gifts such as reusable coffee cups and everyone’s gifts came in a reusable jute bag. I won’t go into my new year’s eve, but let’s just say that it involved wine and a karaoke machine…!
What did I miss?
So, what did I miss news-wise while I was gone? In the UK and the around the world, the impact of plastics on our oceans has shot to the top of the news, thanks to the fantastic Blue Planet series. It seems like a page has been turned. People are really starting to think about the impact that the waste we produce has on the planet. It is still plastic galore out there, but the conversation is happening and that’s a vital first step. My Facebook newsfeed is now full of posts about reducing waste it makes me so happy! It’s finally happening!!
In other news, China’s announcement that it will no long import plastic waste will have a huge impact around the globe. This was something I wasn’t really aware of, but we ship an insane of waste to China (400,000 tonnes went from the UK to China in 2016) to let them deal with it. They’ve said enough is enough, which leaves us facing the question of what to do with our waste. Hey, how about not producing it in the first place?!
The UK government have suggested numerous taxes on things such as coffee cups, which is really positive. The plastic bag charge had a huge impact, so a similar charge on coffee cups, plastic bottles and any other single use plastic packaging would do so much to reduce our waste. Hopefully alongside a tax will come education about why it is being introduced so that it can be seen as a positive move and not just a money making scheme.
Anyway, here’s to a waste-less 2018! Check out my Seven Deadly Sins for seven easy changes you can make today. Let’s make going plastic free the new normal and work together to take better care of our beautiful planet. It’s a really exciting time for the ever growing waste-less community and I’m so pleased to be a part of it.
